I am reading a surprisingly-engaging and well-written book called the History of Christianity by Paul Johnson. The path to orthodoxy in the first few centuries was not anything like many imagine. It was not a professional soccer match, highly coordinated, but far more like the swarm-ball played by 5th-graders, with a host of doctrinal variations, aberrations, and yes, heresies, which took 3-4 centuries to cull -- and which then, like gophers in Caddie Shack, kept popping up again repeatedly over the centuries.

And certainly such aberrations of teaching and doctrine are not by any means limited to the Left -- although I think the number of conservative Christians who believe in legislating morality or establishing a Christian theocracy is far, far less than the media and public perception would indicate.

The heresy you describe is not very original. Some of Jesus's followers believed that He was going to lead a Maccabean-style revolt against Roman rule. Big mistake.

There is a paradox in all this. The Kingdom is partly IN this world, but not OF this world. We are to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and visit the imprisoned, but the notion that the lion will lay down with the lamb because of our efforts will turn us into cat food.

This heresy is not just of the Left. The social conservative notion that we can legislate our way to righteousness, whether it's prohibition, abstinence education, etc., etc. is equally mistaken when drawn out of proportion.

When it comes to sinners, I am the chief, not Eliot Spitzer, Britney Spears, or Jeremiah Wright.

Uh, no, I'M not an atheist. I just picked what he said because I liked the reference to "grace."

No, not that kind of grace, the kind that Jackie Robinson had.
I strongly denounce atheism in all it's forms and have lived my life by....

Oh, forget it.
I hope you know what I mean.
