What I don't like about labeling alcoholism as a "disease" is that it's just a label, and both good things and bad things can come from labels.
The fact that AA works has little or nothing to do with whether alcoholism is or isn't a "disease."

a moving and wryly funny story. Except for the stealing part, it could be one of my sons. The brilliant, convoluted one.

Is it synchroncity that you bear the same name as one of the co-founders AA --Dr. Bob?

Roberto Assiagioli had an interesting "cure" for addictions (the disordered will, I think he called it): his patients wrote over and over, endlessly, one of the psalms. Everyday...

Such used to be the point of penance, to bring the soul back into contact with its center.

One of my family, as briiliant as your patient, had a frontal lobotomy to cure his intractable drug addiction. Forty years later he died on a back ward in a VA hospital. One hopes they were kind to him.

BTW, it 'cured' his addiction. No more heroin.

There is no despair as deep as the one found in that inner abyss. I have tried to fill it with any number of things such as drugs, alcohol, love and sex to no avail. There is the constant gnawing away at your spirit which leads to actions similar to those of your friend Darin. When the pain and self loathing reach unbearable levels, and this varies by individual, there comes a choice. Go on to the bitter end or abandon your ego, preconceived notions and contempt for the untried and unknown. The pain got so bad for me that I was willing to do anything to end it. When they told me I had to stop drinking, my diseased mind rebelled and through one more bout of self-destruction I realized they were right. I knew that my true problem was a spiritual malady and that these other things were only symptoms. Fortunately there is an answer for this emptiness which devours all. May you find Him now! Thankfully, I never have to be alone ever again.
